Listed companies can be identified by various identification numbers, so-called unique IDs (unique identification numbers). From ISIN, CUSIP, WKN to SEDOL or securities, these IDs can be used to precisely assign securities. The IDs are often used as mapping criteria to link a securities profile with further information. For US stock exchanges such as NYSE, NASDAQ or AMEX, ticker symbols ("SYMBOLs") are used as a further unique ID.
As a rule, the symbols have three or four digits and generally consist of combinations of letters. In the case of SPACs (Special Purpose Acquisition Company), five digits are also possible. There are a few companies on the New York Stock Exchange that have been able to reserve one letter of the alphabet for themselves as a symbol. We have compiled a list of these companies for you here.
