FRIEDRICH VORWERK wins contract for the realization of a 10 MW electrolysis plant planned at the Emden site

Tostedt, February 12, 2025 – Friedrich Vorwerk Group SE (ISIN DE000A255F11), a leading provider in the field of energy infrastructure, has been awarded a contract by the Norwegian energy group Statkraft to build an electrolyzer to produce green hydrogen with a planned electrical output of 10 MW. The company has started the detail engineering of the project and the preparation for the final regulatory approvals. As soon as these and the client's approval to start the main construction phase are available, FRIEDRICH VORWERK will be responsible for all phases of the value chain in construction. In terms of technology, the project will once again use the proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolysis process, with which FRIEDRICH VORWERK has already gained important experience in various previous projects. Initial construction preparations are currently underway at the power plant site. The electrolyzer is scheduled to go into operation in 2027.

Statkraft plans to build and operate the pilot plant at its existing site in Emden, Lower Saxony, where the company already operates a biomass and a gas-fired power plant. The plan is to integrate the plant into the existing infrastructure of the power plant and, with a capacity of 10 MW, to produce around 200 kg of green hydrogen per hour based on renewable energy. This will initially be made available to the regional transport sector via hydrogen filling stations.

The planned project in Emden is just one of many hydrogen-related projects that are currently being implemented. With the hydrogen core network with a total length of over 9,000 km recently approved by the Federal Network Agency, the first framework for a nationwide hydrogen transport infrastructure is to be created from 2025. This will enable central production sites to be gradually connected to the largest hydrogen consumers. This is an important prerequisite for the successful ramp-up of hydrogen in Germany. Due to its broad range of services and technologies as well as decades of experience in the field of qualified pipeline and large-scale plant construction, FRIEDRICH VORWERK expects a strong increase in demand for hydrogen in the future.
