Press release
Jobboom despite crisis: In these areas qualified workers are urgently needed
  • Severe shortage of qualified workers in logistics, skilled trades, healthcare and IT professions
  • From painters to IT security: demand has multiplied in key jobs
  • Focus reports featuring salaries and job trends show what companies can do to compete for skilled workers in key professions
DÜSSELDORF, February 17, 2025 The job market remains robust in key occupations: In 2024, more than four times as many warehouse logistics specialists were needed compared to 2019. The demand for professional drivers has more than tripled in the last five years. At the same time, demand is also increasing in the skilled trades, e.g. painters  (+279%), as well as in highly specialized jobs in IT, e.g. IT security specialists (+196%). This is the result of an analysis of jobs published on Stepstone.de compared to five years ago.

“More people are working in Germany than ever before. Nevertheless, there is a huge demand for workers in many professions. These fields are the key to Germany's competitiveness in the coming years. It is essential to motivate, attract and retain the right specialists for these critical jobs,” says Dr. Tobias Zimmermann, labor market expert at The Stepstone Group. The respective focus reports* from The Stepstone Group now show how the search for skilled workers in logistics, skilled trades, healthcare and IT sectors can be successful and what salaries can be achieved.

Many people in search of a job: Labor shortage occupations profit
The prospects of finding new employees are good: 63% of employees surveyed currently think about changing jobs at least once a month, according to a Stepstone job market survey**. For two thirds of those surveyed, salary is one of the most important decision-making criteria — for more than a quarter, it is job security. “A competitive salary and job security. These are factors with which future jobs in logistics, skilled trades, healthcare and IT can impress,” says Zimmermann.

Differing expectations amongst the supply and demand of employee benefits
When competing for skilled workers, companies are increasingly required to emphasize financial and non-financial benefits offered by employers. But the Stepstone Focus Reports show: There is often a gap between wish and reality. For example, while more than three quarters of employees in the skilled trades would like further professional training, only 30% of companies explicitly mention this in their job ads.

“Further training opportunities are crucial for companies to remain adaptable and help them to remain attractive as an employer in the future,” says Zimmermann. For employees in the healthcare sector, health-related benefits such as sports are important (58%), but only 4% of employers mention such benefits in their job ads — according to an analysis of job ads on Stepstone.de.

“Job seekers increasingly have the choice between several employers. Companies offer many additional benefits — but they also have to make sure they mention them in job ads. In the competition for skilled workers in times of a labor shortage, this can be a game changer,” says Zimmermann.
