Merzauer Agrar GmbH has taken an important step towards sustainable animal breeding and regional economic security: The company signed contracts to supply a Wagyu herd of over 350 animals, consisting of mother-cows and calves. The cattle come from a leading European breeding farm for Wagyu cattle which had to file for bankruptcy in the summer of 2024.
Merzauer Agrar GmbH, together with a team of employees of the insolvent company, implemented a concept for animal welfare continuation in order to alleviate the consequences of the insolvency for the Wagyu herd but also for the employees and creditors of the insolvent company. With the operational takeover, Merzauer Agrar GmbH is sending a strong signal for the preservation of jobs and animal welfare. "The takeover of this extraordinary Wagyu herd offers a unique opportunity to continue the high-quality breeding of this globally valued cattle breed in Germany," explains Denise Ulbrich, Managing Partner of Merzauer Agrar GmbH. "At the same time, we are seeking to secure jobs and make an active contribution to animal welfare by preserving regional structures in Thuringia." The meat of the Wagyu cattle, which originally come from Japan, is exceptionally marbled and therefore particularly tender and flavorful. In order to achieve top quality and ensure animal welfare the same time, Merzauer Agrar GmbH will implement a sustainable breeding and fattening process. In addition to mother-cow and pasture farming, there is a focus on genetic optimisation. With the combination of innovative breeding methods, regional value creation and sustainability, Merzauer Agrar GmbH underlines its role as a responsible player in German agriculture.
